Protest Music

tear it out of these open pages
women and kids of all ages
millions of men with blank faces
italicized lies
headlines
bold type

living lives just like deer in headlights
terrified
blind
and wait to die
i wonder when they'll come get me
i wonder when they'll come get me

"we want you!"
have to......need you
and we'll tell you when they're hungry again
we'll tell you when they're hungry again
it never ends
never ends
never ends

big shot screaming "PUT YOUR HANDS IN THE SKY!!!"
he says "GIVE IT UP BOY! GIVE IT UP OR YOU'RE GOING TO DIE!!!
YOU'LL GET A BULLET IN THE BACK OF THE NECK!!!
IN THE BACK OF THE NECK!! RIGHT BETWEEN THE EYES!!"

-Hands in the Sky (Big Shot) by Straylight Run

It's a very good song, great music. The EP it's on is at least partially a sort of anti-war thing, with a supportive dedication to the troops at back of the liner notes.

It occurs to me that there has been and always will be protest music, but as far as I know there isn't a whole lot of "let's get over there and kill 'em" music. I can think of maybe one song by a country singer (not my strong suit so I can't name him or the title) but that's about it. If anyone can point me to some I'll take a look at it.

And I don't mean war songs from the dark ages that requires a blood-soaked broadsword to perform properly.

Comments:

Toby Keith (and he is a democrat)
Aaron Tippon
Lee Greenwood
3 that I can name off the top of my head that have or have had hit music that supports the troops and the war efforts of the US military.
Toby Keith had 3 or 4 songs - since 9-11 that were hits, and has toured the war zones (at his own expense) giving concerts for the troops! (Capitalism rears its head in that he filmed the trips and used footage of the troops and the concerts in his videos, but. . .)

In fact you'd be hard pressed to find a country and western singer/group that would openly protest the war and/or the military -- it would end their careers. . . case in point: the Dixie Chicks. Their poorly chosen remarks about President Bush, ipso facto the war, and refusal to issue a sincere apology. . . offended their base so badly that they had to change genre. . .

TOBY Keith

American Girls and American Guys
We’ll always stand up and salute
We’ll always recognize
When we see Old Glory Flying
There’s a lot of men dead
So we can sleep in peace at night
When we lay down our head

My daddy served in the army
Where he lost his right eye
But he flew a flag out in our yard
Until the day that he died
He wanted my mother, my brother, my sister and me
To grow up and live happy
In the land of the free.

Now this nation that I love
Has fallen under attack
A mighty sucker punch came flyin’ in
From somewhere in the back
Soon as we could see clearly
Through our big black eye
Man, we lit up your world
Like the 4th of July

Hey Uncle Sam
Put your name at the top of his list
And the Statue of Liberty
Started shakin’ her fist
And the eagle will fly
Man, it’s gonna be hell
When you hear Mother Freedom
Start ringin’ her bell
And it feels like the whole wide world is raining down on you
Brought to you Courtesy of the Red White and Blue

Justice will be served
And the battle will rage
This big dog will fight
When you rattle his cage
And you’ll be sorry that you messed with
The U.S. of A.
`Cause we`ll put a boot in your ass
It`s the American way

Hey Uncle Sam
Put your name at the top of his list
And the Statue of Liberty
Started shakin’ her fist
And the eagle will fly
Man, it’s gonna be hell
When you hear Mother Freedom
Start ringin’ her bell
And it feels like the whole wide world is raining down on you
Brought to you Courtesy of the Red White and Blue

There ya go,
Steve
