Intuit decides that Quicken customers have had it too easy

I just ran my personal copy of Quicken 2002. It's a pretty basic version, I didn't pay much for it but it does everything I need it to do. I've been using Quicken since 1996 or so and haven't balanced a checkbook by hand since.

So, this time, just now, when I start it, I get this HUGE popup telling me that as of April/May of this year my online services will no longer work. Tech support is also going away but I never needed it so I don't care.

I use Online Services every time I open Quicken. I update my accounts to banks and credit cards, I get stock quote updates to stocks I own. Everytime. And they are telling me all I have to do to continue to use this service is buy the new 2004 version. (NOTE: they do point out helpfully that I can still do all that account and stock updating by manually entering the data from whatever source I choose...HAHAHAHAHA)

WHAT?!?!?!?!?!!

So I am being blackmailed into buying software I don't need by having the software I have crippled unilaterally. Considering that all the horsepower behind downloading my bank and credit card statements is handled by those respective banks and is frankly none of Intuit's business to interfere with this is even more aggravating.

Way to go Intuit. I am not the only one to notice this little business move. I think there will be a LOT of people unhappy with Intuit about this. When they shut off this service not only will I be uninstalling Quicken and moving to Microsoft Money (which any of my friends will tell you is a BIG DEAL for me), but I will not be using their Turbotax software for my taxes this year.

This is shameful and very disrespectful of their customers, and I hope they pay for it dearly.

I already wrote them a feedback email expressing my displeasure, if you use it and feel the same I suggest you write to them too so they know how big a blunder this is.

Screw you Intuit.

Comments:

Yeah, they always do that. Fuckers. They did that to me with my Quicken 99. Their software has always proven to be very clumsy and often counter-intuitive to me anyway, so maybe I'll switch to Money, too.
